This was by far one of the most relaxed and utterly beautiful and intimate weddings I had the pleasure to be part of.
I was blessed to work with a dear friend, Darryl Burger, chef extraordinaire and owner of The Field Kitchen who was first contacted by Dave & Kirsten to provide the catering for their intimate wedding celebration at Klein Constantia Wine Estate. It was the first (and most likely the last as Dave used his connections in the wine industry to pull off this great coup!) wedding celebration ever held at this small exclusive estate and the only elements we had to work with was the majestic beauty of this gorgeous wine estate set in the rolling vineyards of Klein Constantia in Cape Town.
When I met Kirsten she was the epitome of a gorgeous, happy bride-to-be with a vision for hosting a wedding celebration that was off the cuff and totally different from any wedding her and Dave had attended in the past! Kirsten and Dave wanted a casually elegant, relaxed memorable day filled with fun! Dave being in the wine industry wanted the theme to be centred around wine and together with their love of all things wine and food gave us a brief to create a wedding celebration that was focused on exceptional food paired with extraordinary wine and fun entertainment for their guests!
Kirsten and Dave thought a day time picnic suited all the criteria for their eclectic wedding celebration and the stage was set for a day filled with laughter, dancing, entertainment, gourmet food with vintage wines, champagnes, lots of colourful flowers as well as a gin and champagne bar!
The wedding ceremony took place on the lawn in front of the historic old wine cellar and Kirsten and Dave exchanged their vows framed by hundred year old oak trees and brightly coloured flowers set in massive vases. Kirsten's couture wedding dress made by Robyn Roberts was absolutely exquisite and her beautiful bridesmaids complemented her elegant, yet casual Grecian style dress in navy blue dresses all in different styles. Dave and his Groomsmen looked dapper in their elegant suit pants, crisp white shirts, braces and brightly coloured red socks! Dave even selected French champagne corks which held special memory for him and Kirsten to use for the gents brightly coloured boutonnieres.
The wedding reception took place on the lawn in front of the old and recently restored Manor House under a grand marquee. Seating was a combination of pallet tables and picnic benches for the elderly folk. The table scapes consisted of brightly coloured locally grown flowers in vintage tins and vases that Kirsten has been collecting for years! Each vase and tin holds a special memory for Kirsten and it was lovely to be able to include these as decor in the wedding celebration.
Every detail was carefully thought of from the locally made name cards, to the sweet jelly bean favours for the ladies beautifully packaged by Kirsten and her bridesmaids, to the exciting Lotto cards for the gents for that nights Super Millions Lotto Draw! Dave even purchased a wine barrel for guests to sign which they have placed in their garden as a keepsake from their wedding!
The outdoor photo booth provided hours of laughter as guests posed and used themed cut out words and scrabble cards to create amusing and sweet messages for Kirsten and Dave! All this was captured with polaroid cameras and Kirsten left an array of craft paper, pens and stickers for guests to stick their polaroid photos in a hand-bound guest book.
The champagne and gin bar was a massive hit and the barman was certainly kept busy with guests enjoying the choice of gin or champagne whilst the canapés were being served.
The 5 course meal was served on mezzo platters and paired with the finest selection of South African wines. The beautifully presented platters were as equally delicious and gorgeous to look at and my mouth is watering just thinking about each course!
Guests were also kept entertained by a variety of lawn games including Boulle, Giant Jenga and Croquet! White paper parasols provided the ladies with shade whilst playing lawn games and also became great photographic props!
Guests danced the afternoon away with groovy tunes selected by the bride and groom and true to this fun-loving couple, guests were treated to a first dance which included the bridesmaids and groomsmen dancing to the tune of "Shut up and Dance" by Walk the Moon.
Kirsten has an absolute love for all things chocolate and guests were treated to the most decadent chocolate brownies accompanied by Lindt chocolate balls I have ever eaten! In fact, if I had a time machine, I would go back in time just for those brownies!
Delicious home-made lollipops were handed out to energetic dancing guests to cool them down and mouth-watering fillet steak, chorizo and rocket burgers were given to departing guests to ensure that their taste buds were properly satiated for the night.
Guests danced way into the night and eventually only left when we called Ubers to come and pick them up! Clearly a wonderful wedding for a phenomenal couple! Kirsten and Dave - thank you for allowing Darryl, Liz and myself to be a part of your wedding celebration and we wish you many happy, fun-filled and exciting years to come!
Feedback from the newly wed couple:Our wedding truly was the most special day we could ever had hoped for. Ursula and her team did everything they could to make sure that the day went smoothly, which wasn't an easy task considering our venue was basically just a lawn. Ursula was meticulous with the details throughout the process, which meant that even when the weather was threatening the day before I knew I didn't need to panic - that was her job!
For us, the day was all about our friends and food and wine and we know all our guests had the most relaxing, wonderful day, which is exactly what we wanted. The décor was gorgeously done, my flowers were unbelievably beautiful and the food was awesome. I was very happy with how Ursula, Liz and Darryl worked so well with Dave and I to incorporate our ideas into their planning, so in the end the day was really a reflection of us.
Thanks so much for all your hard work!
