Our Weddings - Garron's 50th Birthday

I was contacted early November to meet with Garron and Natalie to discuss his 50th birthday planned for the 9th December on his private farm, Frikana just outside Robertson. I had no idea what the brief would be until I had met with them and then realized that I had barely a month to coordinate accommodation for 130 people travelling in from the USA and in and around South Africa, book 4 bands, hire furniture and decor, book staff and basically plan an event that was due to take place over 3 days in 3 different places on Garron’s farm which had a kitchen and not much else!

Not one for being daunted by challenges, I set to work!

Garron is an avid music fan and for his 50th birthday he wanted to create a mini music festival on his farm for his family and closest friends and work colleagues.

Guests were to be accommodated Friday to Sunday at Rivierzicht river resort in their bungalows and cabins and in Hey Pioneer Glamping Tents and Kreef Hotel tents. All the guests received a “Welcome Bag” with personalilzed water bottle, torch, citronella candles, delicious snacks and a welcome letter from Garron on arrival.

Everyone was invited to join Garron and Natalie at Frikana for a casual braai on Friday night and the festivities officially kicked off with a welcome lunch at the river deck on Saturday afternoon.

The amazing catering team at The Field Kitchen had ice-cold margaritas and pulled pork and fish tacos ready for the guests on arrival who were entertained by Well Done Sun, a fabulous local folk band with an eclectic sound whilst lazing along the water’s edge for a relaxed and fun afternoon!

Garron’s dad is an avid blues fan and I was tasked with finding a jazz pianist to kick off the champagne and canape´s at 5pm in the marquee attached to Garron’s beautiful homestead. Jason Roelen was incredible, and I can highly recommend him for any blues and jazz entertainment!

Con Viljoen from Tent Men set up the marquee, lighting and dance floor which looked incredible at night! We loved the naked globes and outside fairy lighting!

Guests were spoilt for choice with a champagne and wine bar, craft beer and gin stations from Saggy Stone  and 4 delicious courses prepared by The Field Kitchen and everyone could not stop complimenting the delicious food! It is always a pleasure working with Darryl Burger, a close friend and chef extraordinaire. The Field Kitchen’s food not only looks incredible but is beyond tasty!

Gerald Clark kicked off the evening’s entertainment, followed by the most hilarious and brilliant speeches by Garron’s dad, his brother, best friend and Natalie. The speeches were a true testament to the very special man that Garron is!

Once the speeches were out the way, DJ Dino Moran kicked off the dancing with some serious international music vibes and guests partied the night away!

On Sunday morning we turned the marquee around for breakfast and much-needed coffee served by Lu Brew! Guests had hang over cure kits and take-away munchies for the road! Some friends preferred another drink and when we left the farm to return to Cape Town there was a crowd sitting around the pool sipping their drinks, laughing and enjoying another beautiful summer day!

A big thank you to Pieter from Robertson Florists who delivered the stunning Proteas and aloes used for the décor in and around the farm and to the incredible team at Baie Goeters who helped us set up in 3 different locations in 50-degree heat on Friday! Thank goodness for the river, a lovely swim and an ice cold Gin & Tonic in the afternoon after we set up!

The entire weekend was documented on camera by the very talented Sheldon Moultrie as a gift from one of Garron's close friends!

"Planning a weekend party for 130 people on a barely functioning farm, could not be that hard could it! And it was this naivete, I set about trying to organise my 50th. Thankfully I came to my senses 2 months before the big gig and handed it all over to Ursula. The professionalism that Ursula showed in herding cats was exceptional. I refer to the guest as cats, since they could only be described as above average maintenance. Probably the most important part of the Boutique Concept Team was that she really worked hard to make sure that I did not stress and have a good time. They are highly proficient of cursing under their breaths and smiling at the same time. I had such a good time at my own party that I would do it all again on my 51st. Thank Urs and Team for making my dream of my own small music festival, 4 bands, 2 locations, 2 days, and lots of good friends a reality. The cherry on the top is of course how well you worked with the maestro Darryl Burger the field kitchen. Thanks guys people are still talking about the party of the year."  - Garron  Reynolds facebook review

Just a quick message from Sarah and I to say thank you for sorting out the late accommodation change for us, and of course the incredible party. Wow! It seriously superseded all expectations – the food, setting, music and organisation was insane (good, obviouslyJ). Thank you to you, Bonnie, Claudia, Margaux, and whoever else was helping in the background … a very memorable occasion.
